Kenya Jane Kamau (gooseberry, ripe lime, lemon)

This coffee was grown in the Trans-Nzoja District on the slopes of Mount Elgon in western Kenya.

Livestock farming, cattle raising, and corn cultivation have long been common in this region. However, in recent years, an increasing number of local residents—especially the younger generation—have begun growing coffee. This is facilitated by volcanic soils, a mild climate with temperatures up to 28 °C, and sufficient rainfall throughout the year.

The coffee grown here has medium acidity, medium body, and bright floral notes. The harvest takes place twice a year: from March through July and from October through early January.

Wanrich Wanrich Coffee is a family-owned company founded in 2015. In the early years, the coffee trees on Jane Kamau’s husband’s family plantation did not bear much fruit. However, at a local agricultural fair, she met representatives from the Coffee Research Institute and secured their support for further development. Jane began receiving assistance from the Coffee Research Institute on selecting the most productive varieties for planting, adhering to a tree-care schedule, and gaining a better understanding of the market.

She later took a course on coffee exports and, within six years, increased her farm’s yield 50-fold! Jane currently serves on the board of NORT—a women’s group working to establish a central coffee processing station for farmers in the region.
